What is hair transplant?
Hair transplant is a surgical technique that removes hair follicles from one part of the body to a bald or balding part of the body. The part where hair follicles are removed is termed as a donor site while the bald or the balding part of the body is referred to as recipient part. This surgical technique is commonly used as a remedy to male baldness and in some cases women.
Which are the methods of hair transplant?
Once an individual feels like going through the procedure, he or she goes to the doctor whom after assessment will decide which of the three methods to use. Most of the hair transplant companies provide two conventional methods that involve surgery that is the follicular unit transplant (FUT) and the follicular unit extraction (FUE). However, at the International Hair Institute along 50 E Washington Street, they provide an extraordinary remedy and a unique one known as Platelet-Rich Plasma, which is a non-surgical treatment for hair loss.
What are the procedures for both methods?
The procedure is usually done at the doctor’s office, depending on an individual’s density and thickness of the hair, the doctor can decide which method to use.
The FUT Hair Transplant.
This procedure usually involves the excision of the strips of the skin from the donor portion that contains the follicular units (generally at the back of the scalp) in the pair range of 3-4 follicular units. Usually, each follicular unit contains the sebaceous glands, nerves, a small muscle, and occasional fine vellus hairs. At the International Hair Institute, to prevent transaction or injury of the graft, the follicular units are separated under a microscope. The grafts are finally deposited to the receiving portion. The donor area is then numbed using a local anesthetic.
This method is made possible by the fact that hair follicles are genetically programmed to continue growing without the influence of androgens and dihydrotestosterone which cause hair loss. In a high-level professional setting, like at the International Hair Institute, the doctor decides on the number of follicle units needed to produce a natural look. Some of the advantages of this method are:
The FUE hair transplant.
Involves random punching to extract the hair grafts. This method has a limit as random punching does not allow to target the donor portion sufficiently and surgeons are bound to limit the area. Each punching usually requires space for further punching that automatically decreases the donor area. This means that punching is also done at the unsafe areas (places of the high risk of thinning) thus may result in temporary outcome of the procedure.
At the International Hair Institute, they make the donor area larger such that they do not leave a linear scar or mark such that when an individual has a short haircut, the scars cannot be seen. The concept behind this is, if the donor area is not increased, the hair will look thin and the area (donor) empty. The hair will not lie naturally as it should. This method has some advantages, they include:
The disadvantage of this procedure is that it may be a temporary solution since the hair may be from unsafe regions and also it is an expensive procedure.
The platelet-rich plasma hair transplant.
This is not a common method in many hair transplant institutes, luckily, in the International Hair Institute, they provide all the three methods. This method can be used in the treatment of hair loss for both men and women. It entails drawing blood from the individual, then spins it in a centrifuge to separate platelets and plasma. The doctor then injects the plasma to the area of hair loss. Plasma usually contains growth factors that help improve the health of the hair and stimulates the development of new hair follicles.
Expectations and recovery.
After the surgery or procedure, it’s of importance to take pain medications for some few days. In most cases, individuals have to wear bandages over their scalp for a day or two because after the procedure the scalp becomes very tender.
After three weeks the transplanted hair will fall out as new growth will start making its way. To stimulate fast growth, a surgeon may prescribe the hair-growing drug minoxidil. The cost of the transplant ranges from $5600 to $13000 depending on the amount of hair you want to be moved. At the International Hair Institute, they have modern facilities and proficient professionals to ensure risks such as excessive bleeding and infections are not experienced.
